a suitable boy - the book ;)

three words why I havnt been blogging in a while... ' a suitable boy'

vikram seth's book has me hooked... ive been so captivated by it that the first 5 mintues of free time I get, I run for the book :) I cant keep my hands of it.. so far ive read only a measly 250 pages of the 1400 odd pages... and I must be honest.. its been a while since ive been this impressed by an author this early into a book... I cant help but be amazed at the simplicity of writing style... yet the brilliance it manages to convey... the emotions... the setting... it has the power to take to a whole new dimension :)

so there you go... with living in buffalo every morning and a post-independence 1950's India every evening... cant blame me for not blogging!!!!

My strong recommendation... if you havnt read it yet... you are probably missing something out...

*Sighs* if only seth was not gay ;)

PS: Thanks Aruna and Niranjan for the book... one of the best gifts Ive gotten so far!!!!

football and shakespeare

well.. thats the answer for what has been keeping me busy of late - football and Shakespeare.

American football... till last season, I dismissed it as rough and something that dint make sense to me. However the start of this season had my boyfriend hooked to the games and as I sat beside him watching them, I picked up the rules and I should admit that it was more than just interesting. What I had earlier thought of as rough hit slowly made sense as a defensive tackle :) Now I root for my home team- the Bills and of course the indomitable Colts!!!! I should mention here that now I cant imagine Sunday afternoons without the games!

Now for the other, the book I'm currently reading, 'Tales from the age of Shakespeare' is quite a read. Being an admirer of the works of Shakespeare, I've always wondered where he drew his inspiration from, how the society was during his time, what the other stories from his time was like.... I happened to find this book in a charming old bookstore in Northampton (Thanksgiving break travel)... that is a collection of stories from other writers from the time of Shakespeare and I'm loving it so far! Better yet, the book is in old English... which makes it all the more fun. Somehow during my time doing my Masters my reading habit went down the drain, but now that I'm working and life seems way more ordered than it ever was... that leisure reading is one of the few constants in my life! I should say after a day of work... its one of the most relaxing things I can imagine doing.

btw.... my thanksgiving break was the best - Amherst, Mass and Northampton... i miss it already! More about it on my next post... till then...

Go Bills!

the clash of the titans! yeah rite.....

Of late all that ive heard is 'om shanti om' ... 'saawariya'... which is the better of the two hindi movies.... one camp taking at stab at the other... so I finally decided to watch both the movies and here is my verdict: I could stand neither!!!!

Om shanti om, in my opinion is overly hyped.... after watching the last farah khan movie... 'main hoon naa', I really didnt have great expectations for this movie...the costumes were tacky, the plot was a time worn tale, the music mediocre.... the only good i saw in the movie, Arjun Rampal who plays the bad guy convincingly and at times Deepika... sadly shah rukh was disappointing... his age shows and somehow it dawns on the viewer that he probably shouldnt be playing a 'cool dude' character anymore!

Now for Saawariya... I usually watch almost every movie... but this one literally put me to sleep... the movie was in one word - boring! With a song every 5 mins, it can get irritating... Salman khan in his cameo looked more like the baddie than a man in love... Rani I ought to say cant pull of the role of a prostitute and still manage to be classy... instead she comes across as downright cheap... the voice... the dialogue delivery... very crass! ranbir and sonam... lot of potential!

What i find interesting is that Im never this critical about hindi movies... but with all the hype and hoopla... one would think that these two movies can deliver a little more than putting people to sleep...

So there it is.. a post after a month and all I can write about is the movies... comes to show nuthing else has been happening... work... cooking... reading... living in the moment!

People often complain about the routine in their lives... heres my two cents - it can be good!

vacation plans...

Awrite... in less than a months time.. I will be out of school officially... and what I feel right now is a mix of excitement, fear and happiness... with more than a months break before I start my work full time... my mind is brimming with ideas for the vacation...

Hopefully a trip back home to see amma n appa n sharan... and eat amma's food in a most glutton like fashion ;) to the point where my mom would think I was starving the last couple of yrs... to seeing more of the USA... the options are wide open... Ideally I would love a trip back home with tk... spend some time with evryone out there... n then head back here early enuf to have a couple of weeks to spend here...

But then again... knowing me.. I almost always plan.. and nevr follow through... either all this.. or I spend just about every single day of my break eating.. sleepin.. watching tv n reading books...

:D

harry potter - the book

disclaimer - spoilers ahead!!! don't tell me I dint warn ya

The final potter book... I still remember being lazy to go to the bookstore on Friday night and opting for a door delivery on Saturday morning and then repenting the decision 'coz the book was delivered only in the afternoon and I was already going crazy by then... anyway.. the book in my opinion was 'fantabulous'!!!

A fitting ending to a fitting series of books I ought to say. Heres what I thought of it..

Deathly Hallows begins on a great note, it seemed like the action picked up right from the word go. Steadily building up pace and adding heaps of dead characters, very gripping. Each of the three primal characters are portrayed in depth - Harry: slightly impatient, impulsive and intuitive, Hermione - intelligent, logical yet emotional, Ron: weak at times yet so brave. Loved the way some loose ends were tied, how all the characters played a part - including neville's grandmom :) and Voldermort, oh man simply amazing, this book in my opinion is what depicts Voldemort in all his dark glory. Though there was always mention of how cruel or ruthless he was in all other books, this book sure gives him his due!

The language so simple, it could make an easy read for every generation ( my younger sis devoured it!).. yet every emotion - fear, love, happiness, surprise and some moments of utter pain is captured so vividly!

I laughed with the characters, shed a tear with them, fought their battles with them... and I couldnt be happier that Rowling did leave a lotta hope for something to forward to in Potter series... I sure do hope theres more... whether Harry or the next generation!!!

Oh yeah... I did absolutely nothing the weekend, ate, slept, and lived the book!

PS: never once expected the Snape n Lily thingie :)
